Finnish-Americans in the Brantwood area made wooden skis circa 100 years ago. The ski (one of a pair) in the photograph was made by Jack Perkio. Other skis were made by Matt Lapisto. The Koskela House Finnish Museum at Brantwood, Wisconsin, has several pairs of locally made wooden skis on display.

When Arnold and Violet Koskela passed away they left some letters.
From a letter dated August 5, 1957, from a Finnish-American non-family member from Illinois, addressed to Arnie & Vi while they were vacationing in Brantwood:
“…Could you bring back a couple of bags of Co-op Old Fashioned Toast–”Korppua?” We’ve been home a week and we’ve gone thru two bags already. They sure beat this Bohemian bakery they have around here…”
Co-op Old Fashioned Toast sold at the Brantwood Co-op Store, was “Korppua” to the Finns and “Zweiback” (twice baked bread) to us Germans. It was good!
It is always nice to receive letters like the following from Marianne:
“Delighted to hear from you–getting the picture of your architectural GEM and you sharing the exciting story of MAKI TALO. It must have been such a joy to plan, work and see all come together–so perfectly. You know–I am going to solicit an invitation to see this marvel in its uniqueness and tranquil setting! In 2009!”
